Deschutes National Forest- Metolius River and Whychus Creek

The two wild and scenic rivers that frame Sisters Country, the Metolius River and Whychus Creek, are being reinvigorated and rediscovered. Come be a part of this legacy and lend your hand to local restoration efforts on National Public Lands Day! Bring the whole family. Care for your piece of the spectacular National Public Lands that make up our 193 million acre backyard by volunteering at this Friends of the Forest® Day. Volunteers will maintain trails winding around the Metolius, pull invasive weeds along the Whychus just upstream from Sisters, construct trails on the Peterson Ridge Trail System, and plant and water trees. Volunteers are invited to join us at a reception at Sisters Artworks where paintings from the Plein Air “Paint Out” celebrating the magic of the Metolius will be displayed. Volunteers will learn about the community collaborations that sustain restoration efforts, meet new people with similar interests, and enjoy a beautiful day outdoors in Sisters Country. Partnering organizations include the National Forest Foundation, Sisters Trails Alliance, Wolftree, Upper Deschutes Watershed Council, Friends of the Metolius, and the Deschutes National Forest- Sisters Ranger District. SOLV Beach and Riverside Cleanup

Saturday, September 25th is the date of the SOLV Beach and Riverside Cleanup, presented by the Oregon Lottery. Thousands of volunteers will clean up Oregon's beaches from the California border to the Columbia River and also work along rivers, creeks, lakes and other waterways throughout Oregon and SW Washington - improving the quality of water that we all use for drinking, recreation, agriculture and more. This is the first year that SOLV has expanded our popular fall beach cleanup to include inland projects. Much of what volunteers collect at the beach is carried there by rivers, streams, and storm drains (data collected from the 2009 cleanup tells us that 60-80 percent of ocean trash originates from inland sources). Volunteers will take local action to address the global problems of marine debris and degraded water quality by cleaning up neighborhoods and waterways and removing invasive plants throughout Oregon. Most projects run from 10 am to 1 pm. For more information visit http://www.solv.org/programs/fall_beach_cleanup.asp or contact Brett Lyon, SOLV’s Outreach Coordinator at brett@solv.org or 503-844-9571 x 332.
