Partners: Girl Scouts of the USA

National Public Lands Day: September 25, 2010

National Public Lands Day (NPLD) is the largest outdoor volunteer event benefiting America's public lands. NPLD is held annually on the last Saturday of September.  Eight federal agencies and dozens of state and local land agencies participate in this annual day of service. In 2009, an estimated 150,000 volunteers worked to improve over 2,000 sites in every state of the nation, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam.

NPLD provides an opportunity for Girl Scouts of all ages to improve America’s parks, forests and beaches. Girl Scouts may participate as a troop, council or an individual. This is the seventh year that NPLD has partnered with the Girl Scouts of the USA. In 2009, 5,000 Girl Scouts from 229 troops volunteered at 116 parks throughout the country.

Girl Scouts participating in NPLD can -

  • Work side by side with an environmental expert;
  • Enjoy a hands-on activity improving public lands or a Girl Scout camp while learning about nature;
  • Engage in long term service projects that benefit the community and observe how their actions benefit our planet;
  • Learn about environmental and outdoor careers;
  • Earn Girl Scout awards related to the environment;
  • Use the event to complete a Gold, Silver or Bronze award;
  • Be active outdoors and have fun!
